The Arizona Interscholastic Association strictly governs the criteria for the medical examination of Arizona's student athletes. Health histories are required, as is a (generally) brief physical examination to discover any disqualifying medical conditions which could make participation in sports life-threatening. Our current charge is $30 To download the AIA Student Physical Evaluation Form: The physical covers: height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, lung and heart sounds, vision screening, form and function of the neck, spine and extremities, impairments of the eyes, ears, nose, throat. Resting and post-exercise heart rate is required. A urine test is no longer required for AIA sports participation physicals. Young men need to know that a hernia check is required, but is discretely performed (the 'ole "turn your head to the side and cough" routine). Despite rumors to the contrary (generally passed on by older siblings to the junior high student athletes) rectal examinations and complete disrobing is not necessary to conduct or complete an AIA medical sports examination. Our staff have been examining teenagers since 1975 and understands their need for discretion and privacy. The appropriate parent is always invited to chaperone our examinations.
